Description

This study examines the evolution of libraries as instruments of knowledge dissemination, inclusiveness, and sustainable development from the era of Alexander the Great to the modern library system in Nigeria within the context of the Industrial Revolution and its contemporary extensions. The ancient Library of Alexandria serves as an early model of a universal knowledge institution that promoted intellectual inclusiveness by bringing together scholars from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds. This historical foundation highlights the enduring role of libraries as centers for learning, research, and cross-cultural exchange. The Industrial Revolution marked a significant turning point in the development of libraries by enhancing mass production of books, improving literacy rates, and facilitating the establishment of public libraries. However, it also introduced social inequalities that limited access to information for certain groups, thereby underscoring the need for more inclusive library services. In the contemporary digital age—often described as the Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions—libraries are increasingly leveraging information and communication technologies to expand access to knowledge, bridge digital divides, and support lifelong learning. Focusing on Nigeria, this paper explores how modern libraries are adapting to technological advancements but addressing challenges such as inadequate funding, infrastructural deficits, and unequal access to digital resources. It argues that inclusiveness in library services—through digital innovation, community engagement, and equitable access—is essential for achieving sustainable development goals. By drawing parallels between ancient and modern practices, the study emphasizes that libraries remain critical agents of social transformation, capable of fostering education, innovation, and national development in an increasingly knowledge-driven world
