Description

This study examines the provision of resources and services in public libraries as strategic instruments for promoting business development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in Kano State, Nigeria. In Kano State, public libraries provide a range of services including access to print and electronic information resources, reference and advisory services, ICT facilities, and educational programs designed to enhance users’ knowledge and skills. The study highlights that public library contribute to entrepreneurship by offering business information services, digital literacy training, and spaces for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Through access to relevant market information, e-resources, and skill acquisition programs, libraries empower individuals, particularly youth and women, to initiate and sustain entrepreneurial ventures. Furthermore, the integration of digital technologies and e-learning platforms has expanded the capacity of libraries to support innovation and bridge information gaps in a rapidly evolving knowledge economy. However, the effectiveness of public libraries in Kano State is constrained by several challenges, including inadequate funding, insufficient ICT infrastructure, outdated collections, and limited professional capacity among library staff. These limitations hinder the full realization of their potential as hubs for business and innovation support. Despite these challenges, emerging opportunities such as public-private partnerships, community engagement initiatives, and digital transformation strategies present viable pathways for enhancing library services and relevance. The study concludes that repositioning public libraries as innovation and entrepreneurship support centres is critical for sustainable economic development in Kano State. It recommends increased investment in library infrastructure, capacity building for librarians, expansion of digital services, and the development of targeted entrepreneurial programs.
