Description
Water scarcity is a challenge in South Africa. Large water-consuming institutions, such as universities, are under pressure to implement effective water conservation strategies. This study assessed the current understanding and effectiveness of water conservation practices at a university of technology in South Africa. An online survey was conducted among 102 students and staff. This was followed by interviews with management staff. Findings revealed the university community's commitment, with 95% responding positively to taking action to practise water-saving measures. However, awareness of institutional water conservation initiatives declined to 34%. The university's approach was mainly driven by the ‘Cape Town Day Zero’ drought. However, the university's efforts were undermined by inconsistent communication and engagement with its community. Recommendations include launching an awareness campaign to promote a positive culture of water conservation throughout the institution.
