Description

The achievement of educational goals in public secondary schools depends largely on the quality, competence and continuous professional development of teachers. Training opportunities constitute one of the most important components of teacher compensation and providing teachers with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to respond to emerging educational challenges. Despite substantial investments in teacher education, concerns persist regarding declining school effectiveness in many public secondary schools in Nigeria, as evidenced by poor students' academic performance, inadequate goal attainment and unfavourable school climate. This study investigated training opportunities as predictors of school effectiveness in public secondary schools in North-Central Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the level of training opportunities available to teachers, assessed the level of school effectiveness, determined the relationship between training opportunities and school effectiveness. The study adopted Human Capital Theory and Social Learning Theory as its theoretical foundations. A descriptive survey research design of correlational type was employed. The population comprised principals and teachers in public secondary schools in North-Central Nigeria. Data were collected and analysed using mean, standard deviation, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and regression analysis. Findings revealed that training opportunities were significantly related to school effectiveness and significantly predicted school effectiveness. The study concluded that the provision of adequate training opportunities enhances teachers' competencies and contributes substantially to the effectiveness of public secondary schools. The study recommended increased investment in professional development programmes, regular in service training and institutionalized capacity building initiatives for teachers.
