Description

Africa's Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) demands education systems that foster inclusive innovation, human-centered development, and sustainable transformation while integrating indigenous knowledge and emerging technologies. However, education in many African countries, including The Gambia and Nigeria, continues to be characterized by predominantly teacher-centered approaches, fragmented curricula, and limited integration of experiential learning and multicultural perspectives. This disconnect has constrained the development of graduates equipped with the critical thinking, creativity, intercultural competence, and innovation skills required to address contemporary societal challenges. Against this backdrop, this conceptual paper examines how holistic multicultural education, supported by student-centered and experiential learning, can serve as a transformative framework for preparing learners for Africa's Fifth Industrial Revolution. Drawing on multicultural education, constructivist, and experiential learning theories, the paper synthesizes contemporary literature to explore the intersections between learner-centered pedagogies, indigenous knowledge, inclusive innovation, and sustainable development. It argues that integrating community-based learning, culturally responsive teaching, and indigenous knowledge systems into educational practice can enhance learner engagement, innovation, and responsible citizenship while preserving Africa's cultural heritage. The paper concludes that holistic multicultural education provides a strategic pathway for educational transformation in The Gambia and Nigeria. It recommends curriculum reform, strengthened teacher capacity, university-community partnerships, and the institutionalization of experiential learning to equip learners with the competencies required to drive inclusive innovation and sustainable development in Africa's Fifth Industrial Revolution.
