Description
The quality of teachers in the school system cannot be underrated as no education system can rise above the quality of her teachers The instability in the education reform agenda under different governments in Kwara State has brought about diverse training policies and programmes to effect the quality of teachers at Primary school level. This inconsistency and lack of continuity in training programmes for teachers limit their teaching effectiveness. Different Non-Government Organizations such as ESSPIN, UNESCO and World Health Organization collaborated with the State Government to provide the training programme that would promote teachers’ professional growth and improve quality of instructional delivery in schools. Therefore, the crux of this paper is to examine the training programmes that teachers have undergone in Kwara State in the last decade, and evaluate the extent to which these programmes have produced intended result through teachers’ performance at primary schools. These training programmes include Education Reform Agenda of 2008 and Kwara Learn agenda of 2021. The roles and efforts of Quality Assurance Bureau, and State School Improvement Team are relevant. The inconsistency and instability in the training policies was due to politization of education which influence the efficacy of each of the programmes. Consequently, the quality of teaching at Public Primary Schools becomes grave concern to all stakeholders in Nigeria inspite of the huge amount committed to these different training programmes. Some recommendations made are that the State Government should back up the establishment of training bodies with law, ensure stability in training program without political interference, provide adequate funding for the training of teachers and improve on the school infrastructure.
