Description

This study aims to translate selected Artificial Intelligence (AI) terminology into the Yoruba language to enhance vocabulary and technical understanding within the Yoruba-speaking community, while aligning with the human-centered and sustainability-driven ethos of the Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) in Africa. Moving beyond the efficiency-focused paradigm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), this research recognizes the 5IR’s emphasis on ethical innovation, cultural inclusion, and the harmonious integration of technology with human values. The research adopts a Linguistic Equivalency and Cultural Context approach to ensure accurate, culturally resonant translations of English and Arabic AI terms into Yoruba. This interdisciplinary framework draws on Yoruba texts, morphology, lexicography, semantics, ICT, and science, while also embedding 5IR principles such as inclusivity, ethical responsibility, and sustainable knowledge systems. Key stages include a comprehensive literature review, collection of existing dictionaries, development of a specialized glossary, identification of Yoruba equivalents for AI concepts, iterative translation and validation, and cultural adaptation. In conclusion, the study situates language as a bridge between advanced technologies and indigenous knowledge systems, reflecting the 5IR vision of technology that serves humanity rather than displacing it.
